After sharing my workouts with some special women a couple of weeks ago, I’ve had the opportunity to discuss a little bit about how and why I designed my new workouts the way I did and I thought I’d share that with you. I also hope this will address some of the questions I’ve received on this site about what I’ve been up to.
First of all, I’ve been doing resistance training now for over 20 years. I started in high school and though my weight fluctuated a good bit, I’ve always incorporated some form or fashion of resistance. I used to think that to do resistance training only meant you could use dumbbells or weight machines from a gym. So, when I was trying to lose weight after I had Wilson that’s exactly the approach I took. I wanted to jump back into my heavy weights as fast as I could and force my body back into some sort of pre-pregnancy shape. And that’s where I went wrong…for weeks I tried to get through workouts that in the past had been pretty doable for me and not only was I physically struggling, I was mentally burnt out. And as any new mom knows – you barely have enough energy to get through the day – much less a special reserve to give you a pep rally to get through a workout!
That’s when I started experimenting with bands and with exercises that used my own body’s resistance based on planes of gravity. I had to take a few steps back and just trust that it was okay to try something new, to take the time to intelligently and patiently develop a system that would make me actually look forward to my 5AM workouts. So, I headed off to Target and bought some bands. (since then I’ve bought many, many more….they’re so cheap that I can’t resist when I see a new type!) I took out an old notebook, tried some exercises, created some exercises – and discovered a new approach on how to train.
Many of you have seen my split workouts posted on this blog, so that’s the approach I took with the bands. I divided my body up into different parts and then on different days focused on specific muscles. I wont’ go into more details on that part at this time, but on my new website coming up I’ll have plenty of information on that. Let me just tell you – I quickly learned that not only did the bands challenge me in a new way that lead to long, lean muscle development and a figure that I haven’t seen since before college, but they left me feeling energized, recharged and IN charge.
I have to say that I was thrilled when a friend of mine told me that I should check out an episode of Oprah from this past week where Gwyneth Paltrow was talking about her struggles to lose baby weight from her second child. She told me that my workouts were similar to what they were talking about. I missed the episode but did go to the website and there she was with her trainer – and it’s all about bands and that type of resistance to keep muscles long, lean and strong.
I’m also thrilled to announce that the workouts will be released on QVC and I’ll provide air dates shortly. This makes me so proud as customer service is of huge importance and they have the best track record out there. Also, I have a new website which will go live in upcoming weeks so be sure to stay tuned so that you can link up with my information there. It will be much more user friendly and is based on much of the feedback I’ve received from you on this blog.
I hope you have wonderful week and if you want to be sure that you don’t miss any updates, please look to the right and click on the link that asks if you want to be updated to be provided with this information automatically.
Take care!!

I can’t wait to hear more about them! I know who you’re talking about, and I have always been intrigued by that philosophy. She, though, needs lessons in “leading” workouts, something you don’t need.
Michelle Dozois also has a great set of workouts that uses bands (she also uses weights, but bands are a big part of her series). I’m hoping this will be something I can use in a rotation with those since they are some of my all-time favorites.
Now, if we can just convince Nancy to produce some workouts…

I cannot wait to see them! I believe you may be my first ever QVC purchase. You are truly one in a million and I don’t know whether I am more looking forward to seeing you on your new workouts or seeing you in person on our semi-annual pilgrimage in April!

I am very interested in your new workouts. I always loved your Firm ones. I also tried the Tracey Anerson Mat workout (no bands) and actually like it. So I am really looking forward to your new workouts. Will you send out emails to update and to let us know when they will be on QVC?

Stephanie these workouts sound great. I will admit that after years with the (old) Firm the thought of lifting heavy weights really is starting to make me dread working out. I love the idea of the bands, although I really know nothing about them! The only bands I’ve used are from Leslie’s walking workouts, and while they were good in their own way I’m sure the intensity is nothing compared to what you’re working on. I’m looking forward to what you’ve planned for us. Thank you again for being such an inspiration for us moms!!

Stephanie,
I can’t wait to try your workouts. You’ve always been one of my favorite instructors….especially after meeting you in person with the BSS2 infomercial filming. After my second child, the Firm didn’t work quite the same for me anymore so I started adding in more barre workouts. My body seems to really respond to this kind of training. I love Tracy Effinger’s Squeeze workouts as well as Tracy Anderon’s workouts. I’m looking forward to your program. I love an athletic feel to these workouts and I’m sure you’ll be able to incorporate that into them. I’m so excited for you!

Release on QVC? That is fabulous news! I hope the air dates coincide with when I’m home from work. I’m especially glad to hear that they are like Tracy Anderson adn Tracy Effinger’s workouts, they look so effective and the comments made here seems to support that. I can’t wait (well, I guess I have to wait

I’m really excited about your workouts Steph! I don’t have much “practice” with using bands, but I’m ready to try anything you lead! And that’s AWESOME that they’ll be on QVC! I’m so excited for you Stephanie! And for me!! LOL! I’m getting new workouts soon from one of my all time favorite instructors!

Thanks so much for your posts everybody and I’m so glad you’re excited about what I’ve been up to! It was a huge leap of faith for me to change up my training routine after years and years but I’m so glad I did. I’ve always thought that this would be a good approach and I have notes from years and years of playing around with the concepts I used.
In terms of the workout approach, I took many classic moves that many of you are familiar with, but then added some sort of complementary “stretch” move – still using resistance. My thought when I first started out on this journey is that first I need to stimulate muslce, then I need to stretch it to make it long and lean – but I still need some resistance in the “stretch” phase (if that makes any sense!!). I also utilized some moves traditionally used in yoga and incorporated them in as well – sometimes with the band and sometimes just using your own body’s resistance. I also mixed static and dynamic moves to cross-fire muscle recruiment as much as possible. (You may be holding a solid lower body move in a squat or plie but your upper body is still moving…major time saver here!!) Speaking of time – I purposely made the transitions as quickly as possible. I figure if you hit “play” on the DVD you’re there to get your workout in and get on with the rest of your day as soon as you can.
I feel like it’s kind of a classic weight lifting/pilates/yoga/dance type approach all rolled up in one… of course- on cardio day you know I had to put in my favorite – the football run!! And you actually do get to do cardio with the band as well – major upper body challenge to do a segment with the band in constant tension while the rest of you is moving…great way to cut arms…
Have a wonderful day and stay tuned for the launch of stephaniehuckabee.com!!

I’m really looking forward to these Stephanie. I have to work out in small spaces with limited equipment these days, and I think these will be great.
